As Sale Sharks number nine Gus Warr chased down the loose ball in their match-up against Saracens this weekend, the last thing he expected was to be heavily involved in celebrating the opposition’s try. Well, that’s exactly what happened in hilarious scenes at the StoneX Stadium, spotted by Laura Kate Turner.
The game was tight with three tries apiece and just four points separating the two sides, before Player of the Match Alex Goode threaded a stunning grubber kick behind the Sharks’ defense. As it was bouncing around the try line it looked as if Sharks fullback Joe Carpenter had it covered, before an inconvenient bounce to his right took it out of his grasp and opened up the scoring opportunity for Nick Tomkins.
The Welsh international has been in red-hot form recently and showed true composure as he ensured he did not knock the ball on when pouncing on it. As the celebrations ensued Alex Lozowski went to embrace the try scorer, but not before Tomkins turned to face the home crowd. As a result of his teammate having had his attention taken elsewhere, and Lozowski clearly in need of a hug, he found the nearest body he could find.
That body happened to be the unlucky Gus Warr who subsequently found himself embraced by the Saracens centre, before having his hair well and truly ruffled.

One of my favourite moments yesterday was following Tompkins’ try at 75 minutes sealing the win, @alexlozowski10 was in full celebration mode and the only person available to cuddle, was Sale’s 9, Gus Warr.
So…he pulled him in close and cuddled him real tight #SARvSAL♥️🖤🤗 pic.twitter.com/SuEFqGkvaz
