One of rugby’s most well-known names has hit the headlines once again with a fascinating transfer story. Former Wales, and British and Irish Lions captain, Alun Wyn Jones will be joining Toulon ahead of this year’s World Cup. He will be providing cover for the French side as a large number of their players will be joining up with the national side for the tournament.
Jones declared his retirement from international rugby back in May of this year in a shock announcement that ruled him out of what was expected to be his final major international tournament. The news was met with disappointment from many Welsh fans, albeit a general understanding of the reasons behind the decision. Around the time, the 158-cap second rower was not the only Welsh player to step back from international duties as the likes of Rhys Webb and Justin Tipuric had the same ideas.
It will be a sad goodbye for the record Wales cap holder as he exits Ospreys – a club he has played for since 2005. In his time playing for the Welsh side he has amassed over 250 appearances and scored 24 tries – making him the highest try-scoring forward in the short history of the club.
Toulon director of rugby Pierre Mignoni was pleased to welcome his new recruit: “We are delighted and honoured to welcome a legendary player like Alun Wyn Jones to Toulon. His career demonstrates his immense talent.”
He then went on to add: “His experience, his mental and physical strength as well as his leadership will add to the locker room and to his team-mates.”
