Toulouse are on the verge of recording a historic season double as they are well on their way to defending their Top 14 title to accompany their Investec Champions Cup title.
Leading Bordeaux-Begles 22 – 3 courtesy of two tries from Antoine Dupont and a try from Peato Mauvaka to go with two conversions and a penalty from Thomas Ramos.
Scoring early in the contest, Dupont set the tone for his team as he kept the Bordeaux defence on the back foot as a constant running threat.
Completely outclassing his closest competitor for the French number nine shirt so far, Dupont has run circles around Maxime Lucu in the first half.
Setting up Mauvaka for his team’s second try, Dupont again flung out the perfect pass to get the ultra-athletic hooker into a position where he was facing giant prop Ben Tameifuna in a one-on-one situation.
For all of his brilliance for the opening two tries, it was Dupont’s second score that will go down in history as one of the greatest tries in Top 14 final history.
Claiming a line-out just inside their half, Toulouse ran a superb set-piece play that split open the Bordeaux defence.
First, it was Mauvaka who carried hard at the Bordeaux defensive line before popping the ball back inside to Dupont. Once in possession, the scrumhalf hit the jets as left the Bordeaux defenders in his wake. Facing his opposite number Lucu, Dupont pulled off a chip kick that would’ve looked more at home on a pitch at Euro 2024 than a rugby field before gathering and leaping over the line.
