With a lot of focus on the under performing Barbarians side in the last two weeks, I thought it would be a good time to pull out a classic Baa Baa’s moment from yesteryear.
This try, finished off nicely by big Welsh number eight Phil Davies in the end, is a fine example of what Barbarians rugby is and should always be about.
The try is a classic, there’s no doubt about it, but stands out for two main reasons, namely the inter passing by a group of players from different parts of the rugby world, and that David Campese no look pass.
Campo had a habit of trying the impossible on the field. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. But when you’re good you’re good, and the Wallaby winger made a habit of making a mockery of defences, more often than not.
The whole try though screams pure class, by all involved. Started by Australian captain Nick Farr-Jones with a quick tap outside his 22, Kiwi prop Richard Loe caries it on before popping to the flying New Zealand Sevens star Eric Rush.
Rush then takes it some way further before ever present Neil Back, with a full head of hair, appears in support as the link man who then gets it to Joe Stanley. Stanley to Campese, Campese flick pass inside to that man Back again, Back to Farr-Jones, who looks like he could make it but doesn’t, so he turns in the tackle and finds eighth man Davies who’s run a great line in support to be on hand to dot down for a truly magnificent try.
Without a doubt one of the best team tries in our archive, and an excellent example of Barbarians rugby at it’s finest.
