During an action packed 80 minutes at The Shed, Ben Meehan pulled off a 50-22 that has left everybody stunned.
It is safe to say that Meehan’s kick was not the only ‘talking point’ during Gloucester’s, 16-19 loss to Saracens but it was definitely a moment of magic in an otherwise frantic game of rugby.
With his team under pressure inside their own 22, Meehan peeled off the back of a ruck and attempted an unconventional box kick – taking serval steps out of the ruck rather than the traditional one step kick from the back foot.
Meehan’s technique worked in spectacular fashion.
Not only did he successfully clear his lines and relive the pressure, to the astonishment of everyone watching, the ball travelled the entire pitch and bounced out in the Saracens 22.
This gave Gloucester an attacking lineout 5 meters from the try line and provided rugby with perhaps the first ever 22/22.
Rugby legend Jim Hamilton has called it ‘The Best 50-22 you will ever see”.
