Newcastle Falcons winger Mateo Carreras has been released from the Tyneside club with immediate effect – joining Top 14 team Bayonne for the remainder of the season.
The move will be a big blow for a side who have struggled in recent seasons. The club, although currently sitting bottom of the English Premiership, boasted arguably one of the most impressive wing partnerships in the league. English speedster Adam Radwan will now be without his partner his crime as he tries to help his club off the bottom of the table.
A club statement read “Newcastle Falcons would like to thank Mateo for his contribution during his time in England, and everyone at the club wishes him all the best for his move.”
The 24-year-old had been due to join Bayonne at the end of the season, but thanks to a deal struck between the two sides, his transfer has been granted early.
Fans of the player have been left disappointed by the exit, with the young star proving to have been a fan favourite at Kingston Park.
Falcons supporter Joanne Wilkinson said: “We are incredibly gutted we won’t see you play one last time to give you a good send off, amazing player, an inspiration to my lad, who’s totally heartbroken to not cheer you on one last time. Good luck and all the best @mateocarreras_ we will follow your career from afar”.
Another fan echoed the sentiment, saying: “All the best Mateo. You were a bright light and I will enjoy watching you from afar.”
Bayonne currently sit in 10th place in the Top 14 as the league passes the midway point of the season, currently just 10 points above bottom.
