Flyhalf Sam Costelow guided the Scarlets home for a momentous 32 – 30 Challenge Cup quarterfinal victory over French giants Clermont-Auvergne on Friday evening.
In a topsy-turvy clash that saw the lead change hands throughout, the Scarlets secured their 11th victory from the past 13 outings thanks to a 77th-minute kick from Costelow.
Now set to face URC rivals the Glasgow Warriors in the semi-final, the Scarlets have provided a glimmer of hope for the Welsh regional sides following a tough year to date.
Scoring four tries in the contest, the Scarlets showed their attacking flair of yesteryear was still well within their capabilities.
Getting across the line for one of the Scarlets’ tries was veteran fullback Leigh Halfpenny who was having a fine evening in the red shirt.
Unfortunately for Halfpenny, his evening would be brought to a premature end as Clermont as twice-capped Wallaby centre Irae Simone clattered into him rather awkwardly.
Appearing slightly less severe at full speed, the replays showed a clear collision between Simone’s shoulder and Halfpenny’s head.
From here, the two men would leave the field as Halfpenny was escorted off by the medical staff whilst Simone was shown red.
