Provence Rugby has recently shown great intent to rise from the second division of French rugby with the signings of big-name Wales stars, George North and Tomas Francis. Well, now it appears that the club has its sights set on another big star, this time east of the Severn Bridge.
George North’s former Northampton teammate Courtney Lawes is reportedly in talks to take his 2-metre-tall frame to the south of France. It has been suggested that Lawes has recently visited the Pro D2 side to chat with staff and assess the facilities as he looks to line up his next move.
The 105-cap former England international hung up his sizeable international boots following the 2023 World Cup, despite still being considered one of England’s best players. The 34-year-old has yet to sign on with Northampton Saints for another year, with his existing contract running out in the summer, possibly pre-empting a move away from the club he has spent his entire career with.
One fan summed up the general consensus around the potential move, stating: “George North had it right when he signed for Provence. Playing in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe, getting paid a packet playing a lower standard of rugby. You’d be mad not to!”
Lawes boasts an impressive resumé which will no doubt be viewed with much interest over the next months – he will not be short of options.
