Somehow flying under the radar at 6 ft 4 in, Duhan van der Merwe has undoubtedly become one of the greatest wingers in world rugby. Despite announcing his presence on the world stage with Scotland just under two years ago, van der Merwe has exploded onto the scene in recent years with his powerful running style and impressive athleticism.
Van der Merwe began his professional career with the Blue Bulls in South Africa, before moving to Montpellier in France in 2015. He then signed with Edinburgh in 2017 which eventually qualified him to play for Scotland through residency, before making his international debut in October 2020.
Despite earning accolades for his home country South Africa in both sevens and junior grade fifteens, van der Merwe was never selected for the full senior side. This left him open to the ranks of Scotland, for whom he will face up against South Africa in this year’s world cup. Despite the Springboks having fantastic strength in depth in the backfield, they’ll certainly not be looking forward to facing up against the then 28-year-old in France.
