There are very few better feelings in rugby than booting the ball out of play at the end of a tight match to take victory for your team. Well, that’s the exact feeling a Durbanville player expected as he hoofed the ball sky-high into the stands to end the match this weekend. That feeling was quick to subside, however…
During a high school match in Durbanville, South Africa, the Bishops Rugby 1st team had travelled to face Durbanville High in an Under 19 clash.
Durbanville had started strongly and led their visitors 13-3 a half time. The second half saw Bishops fight their way back into the game with four tries to make the score 28-29 approaching full time.
As the Durbanville High forwards crashed up into the Bishop’s half, the home side had a final opportunity to recover the game for themselves.
Unfortunately for the home side, a serious miscalculation from their full-back caused their attack to come to an abrupt end. Thinking his side still held a slight lead, the number 15 booted the ball out of play expecting the crowd to go wild.
Instead, he was met with visible confusion and anger as the crowd went quiet and teammates flopped to the ground as their valiant efforts were ended with defeat.

A disappointing end for the young full-back, but no doubt he’ll come back stronger and with perhaps a sharper eye on the scoreboard going forward!
