Super Rugby’s Crusaders have confirmed the release of tighthead prop Oli Jager for the upcoming season. The Kildare native might be heading back to Ireland, but his new team is yet to be announced.
Notably, Leinster recently saw their Samoan international captain, Michael Ala’alatoa, sign with French Top 14 outfit Clermont, adding an intriguing twist to the transfer market.
New Crusaders head coach Rob Penny hinted at Jager’s return, stating, “We are in the process of working through that, and, ultimately, that will probably be honored.”
While Jager had previously expressed his ambition to play for the All Blacks, his future seems to be taking a different direction.
“I think I’ve made it pretty clear in the last couple of years that I want to be an All Black.
“I’ve put a lot of effort into it, I’ve stayed in New Zealand. This is my sixth year in Super Rugby. I feel like I’ve been here long enough that I really feel part of New Zealand and I really feel like I’ve got a lot of friends in the team.”
28-year-old Jager was born in London, and is therefore eligible to represent both Ireland and England, adding an interesting dynamic to his potential move.
His departure from the Crusaders raises questions about the next chapter in his rugby journey.
