Top 14 high flyers Bordeaux-Begles handed former European Cup winners La Rochelle their 12th defeat of the season yesterday.
Putting their ultra-physical visitors to the sword, Bordeaux redefined the meaning of thinking outside the box.
Already in a commanding position, leading 29 – 7, Bordeaux was awarded a penalty in the 59th minute just outside their own 22m line.
Act quickly and thinking even quicker, Bordeaux flyhalf Mathieu Jalibert and winger Damian Penaud linked up for the most unlikely of tries.
Spotting that La Rochelle was slowly transitioning from attack to defence, Jalibert spotted acres of space behind the backfield cover.
Kicking long and infield, Jalibert placed the ball beautifully into the La Rochelle in-goal area.
From here, Penaud showed his trademark tenacity to chase the ball at full tilt while the defenders looked to be at more of a jogging pace.
Just as Penaud’s French international teammate Gregory Alldritt was about to tap the ball down, the flying winger pounced!
Proving once again that work ethic trumps everything, Penaud will remember this try for the rest of his days!
