Another week, another Eddie Jones story. Well, that’s how it seems anyway. This time around, Jones has gained plenty of supporters with his response to a journalist attempting to get under his skin regarding his new fly half, Carter Gordon.
The young Rebels player is just settling into the squad after playing less than a handful of games for the international side, and besides a couple of wayward kicks last weekend it’s been fair to say he’s looked promising in the gold of Australia.
Answering questions from journalists ahead of this week’s Bledisloe Cup rematch, Jones took exception to the question: “Last week it was put to you that you got the selection wrong at 10, what gives you the confidence that Carter Gordon not only needs another crack, but is the right choice.”
Standing up for the 22-year-old outside half, Jones replied: “Well yeah, firstly I don’t think I’ve got it wrong mate, in fact, I’m gonna get it right and the player will get it right” before adding, “Anyone who asks that question doesn’t know anything about rugby”.
The journalist then went on to reference Jonny Wilkinson’s first start back in 1998, referencing the comparisons between poor debuts, which once again Jones took an exception to: “If you know anything about rugby, you know that tens need time in the seat, if you don’t know anything about rugby don’t talk to me”

Fans have been split on their opinions regarding the Wallaby coach’s answer, but the below comment from a fan appears to sum up what the majority of comments have been saying.
“I’m no Eddie fan but that is a ridiculous question. In fact, there wasn’t even a question in there, more like part of a coordinated personal attack to unsettle a player. At least in SA we only attack the ref, not opposition youngsters.”
