England enforcer's tour could be over following red card vs Japan

BY Philip Bendon  ·  Saturday Jun 22, 2024

Bath secondrow Charlie Ewels became the first player to be sent off twice in the England jersey as he was sent off in this morning’s clash with Japan in Tokyo.

Attempting to clear a ruck in the 72nd minute, Ewels hit Japanese captain Michael Leitch from the side at the breakdown in what could have been an ugly injury for the veteran backrow.

Initially sent off with a yellow card on review, Ewels would see the incident upgraded to a red by the TMO as it displayed “High degree of danger with no mitigation”.

This now casts the 28-year-old’s place on the remainder of the tour into doubt as a suspension may well be incoming in what would be a blow to England ahead of their two tests against the All Blacks.
