Defending champions England won the Dubai leg of the HSBC IRB World Series Sevens with a 29-12 victory over France. Man of the Tournament Mat Turner scored twice, after his team had beaten New Zealand and Fiji en route to the final.
Dan Norton, Isoa Damudamu, and Rob Vickerman also scored in the final as the team in orange lifted the spirits of England rugby fans after what has been a tough few weeks. Women’s rugby was also on good form as the Test team won their three match series vs New Zealand.
“Mat’s acceleration off the base was phenomenal. He was a huge difference in the side. Last year Ollie Linvey-Haig lit it up for us, this year Mat got all the plaudits and rightly so,” said coach Ben Ryan on Mat Turner’s two tries and great performance throughout the tournament.
“We had gas at the base, gas on the wing with Dan Norton and with Isoa Damu in the middle as the glue that connected the two together. Our backline finally got going,” he added.
Australia won the Plate after beating South Africa, while Fiji beat Argentina in the Bronze final. Scotland convincingly beat the USA in the Bowl final, and Samoa beat Kenya to take the Shield.
