Eddie Jones’s second stint as Wallabies coach got off to the worst possible start in round one of the 2023 Rugby Championship.
Facing a heavily rotated Springbok side, Jones said in the week of the game that he didn’t want to beat a second string Bok side.
It would prove to be a case of being careful what you wish for as the Boks dominated their visitors physically.
Whilst the action on the pitch left a lot to be desired as the Australians simply did not pitch up, the pre match build-up was out of this world exciting.
In a great throwback to the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in which a plan flew over Ellis Park, a flyover Loftus was organised for the Boks first game of the 2023 season.
Clearly, one of international rugby’s greatest venues Loftus was a cauldron once again on Saturday and no doubt played a part in taking the Boks to an emotional pitch that the Wallabies simply couldn’t match.
