Racing 92 winger Wame Naituvi is the latest in a long line of Fijian wingers to put on a truly outlandish try-scoring performance in the Top 14.
Joining the Parisian side Pro D2 outfit Mont-de-Marsan ahead of the 2023/24 season, the 27-year-old arrived having scored 40 tries in 84 outings in the second division.
Immediately translating this ability to the Top 14, Naituvi would score three tries in his first three matches for Racing.
Starting in 14 matches for Stuart Lancaster’s side, the Fijian flyer has scored six tries to date, with his latest against Castres being an absolute doozy.
Setting up a scrum about ten meters out from their own try line, Racing appeared to catch Castres slightly unaware as they launched an attack.
Shifting the ball through the hands quickly, the Racing backline got the ball out to the dangerman Naituvi.
Assessing his options, the winger then kicked forward, and the ball was gathered by Castres fullback Pierre Popelin.
Looking to keep the play alive, Popelin passed the ball back in the field only for French international scrumhalf Nolan Le Gerrac to pounce on an intercept before hacking the ball forward.
From here, Naituvi controlled the ball with some excellent footballing skills before regathering the ball and touching down for the score.
Racing would go on to edge the contest 23 – 21 to pick up some crucial road points and move into the top four on the Top 14 table.
