Former England flyhalf Andy Goode has tipped Ireland backrow Caelan Doris to lead the British and Irish Lions on their tour of Australia next season.
Fresh off captaining Ireland to an impressive victory over the Springboks in Durban, Doris cemented his place as one of the best backrow players on the planet once again.
Topping the carry charts for Ireland with fifteen for forty-two meters as well as winning three turnovers for his team, Doris was a pillar of strength for Andy Farrell’s side.
Speaking about Doris, Goode was full of praise his performance both on and off the pitch.
“You look at Caelan Dorris now, we’re big friends of his, you know Jim’s had FaceTimes off him when he’s been in these dancing places in Las Vegas.
“He’s put his hat in the ring now with that change in performance to be and I said it, he should be Ireland’s captain moving forward.
“They made Peter O’Mahony captain but Lions captaincy and it’s a huge statement as we are a year out from a Lions tour but you’ve got a guy that’s changed the fortunes of Ireland in a week with a leadership performance.
“It was a proper skipper’s performance, that is leading from the front in every facet of the game, even to the point of his post-match press conference where he’s saying ‘I’m in the sin bin, things are going wrong here and I can’t be on the field to influence’. He Comes back on and, my God, does he influence it.
“So Caelan Dorris, for Lions captain, we will start the campaign here.” Goode said.
The Lions will face Argentina in a one off test at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on June 20th before heading down under for nine matches including three tests.
