French Rugby players Hugo Auradou, 20, and Oscar Jegou, 21, have been placed under house arrest following a week in detention, the prosecutor’s office said.
The pair were arrested in Buenos Aires two days after their team’s match against Argentina in Mendoza.
The arrest followed an accusation of rape by a 39-year-old complainant who said “she was violently and repeatedly raped by the pair, who insist there was a consensual sexual encounter.”
It is alleged that the woman was attacked in a hotel in Mendoza in the early hours of July 7 with the accuser having allegedly met the two French players at a nightclub.
The prosecutor’s office released a statement explaining the reasons behind placing the pair on house arrest: “Taking into account the level of proof reached and the non-existence of procedural risk, it is feasible to grant house arrest with a personal bond for each person.”
Whilst under house arrest, the pair were equipped with electronic monitoring bracelets.
Speaking on the player’s behalf, their lawyer, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, said, “This is a very important step forward for the two rugby players and also for French rugby.”
Libarona went on to say, “I want the players to testif, Mendoza has to know what happened there and they both said they are willing to testify.”
Should the pair be found guilty, they face up to twenty years in prison.
