French international scrumhalf Baptiste Serin is regarded as one of the most skilful players of his generation.
Playing in a French side that was somewhat in the wilderness during the early years of his career, Serin stood out as a consistently world-class operator.
Making his debut one year before Antoine Dupont in 2016, Serin held off the now world-famous Toulouse star for a few years before the mantle was firmly passed to Dupont and his club teammate Romain Ntamack as Les Bleus first choice halfback pairing.
By the numbers – July International Tests stats leaders
Since then, Serin has become somewhat of a bit player in French Rugby; still at the peak of his powers at 30-years-old, the Toulon veteran has become arguably the fourth choice scrumhalf in French Rugby behind Dupont, Maxime Lucu and Nolann Le Gerrac.
Getting a rare opportunity this July as France sent a largely experimental side for their two-test series in Argentina, Serin was a star for his team as he guided them to an upset victory over a full-strength Los Pumas in the first test.
Completing 60 passes, 5 runs, 2 offloads and scoring a try in the first test, Serin served as a reminder that he is still firmly a contender to back up Dupont as Les Bleus builds towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Now, back with his club side, Serin has been key to his team’s strong start to the Top 14 season, which currently has them sitting in 4th position.
Coming up just short on the road against Clermont in round five, Serin had another strong outing and kept his team in a position to secure a losing bonus point.
One moment in particular that caught the eye was an incredible shot at goal that Serin slotted in difficult conditions.
As time ticked away on the shot clock, the ball would fall off the tee as Serin was going through his routine before the ball fell off the tee with just seconds remaining.
Stepping up and booting the kick which was from 40+ meters out and on the angle, Serin pierced the uprights for what was one of the best shots at goal you’ll see all season.
Best kick this season? Baptiste Serin, 40m to the side, under the rain and at the last second!
