Harlequins have confirmed that Director of Performance Development Tabai Matson will be moving his role to focus on Harlequins Women’s programme until the end of the season. His new role will end following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season in a mutually agreed exit.
Having joined Harlequins in 2021 as the senior coach for the men’s side, Matson was expected to build upon the success of the cooperative efforts of the four-person coaching team that had led the side to Premiership glory the previous season. Sadly for Matson and the club, their fate was not to be repeated as the club failed to live up to their previous standards.
The exit of the 50-year-old will see the club return to a group dynamic that led to so much success over the early part of the decade – with word from the club that they will not be looking for a successor.
Director of Rugby Billy Millard said: “Tabai has brought huge knowledge and passion to his roles at Harlequins. He has infectious energy and positivity and he has built friendships and collaboration across the Club and our partners. We are really happy that Tabai will continue to support our women’s programme until the end of the season and we wish him the very best for his longer term future coaching career, he will always be a welcome friend at The Stoop.”
Tabai Matson added: “I have loved my time at Harlequins and have enjoyed the strong culture at the Club which is something I feel is crucially important to the success of a club. The time is right for me to look to develop my coaching career elsewhere, but I will always retain my passion for Harlequins. I am excited to support the women’s team across the coming months and push up the table.”
