In Round 8 of Super Rugby Beauden Barrett finished off a fantastic team try for the Hurricanes against the Stormers. The score is being hailed as a potential try of the season contender, check out the video and decide for yourself.
The length-of-the-field score lasted 27 seconds from Reggie Goodes initial ruck turnover, to Barrett touching down amid tumultous celebrations from the supporters and his teammates.
A swift counter attack saw multiple players handle the ball before the fly-half crossed the line.
Hurricanes’ scrum-half TJ Perenara kept an impressively cool head after gaining an unexpected possession on his own 5-metre line. Opting against the usual tactic in such a situation of alleviating pressure with a clearing kick, he looked to his outside to launch the counter play.
Cory Jane was of a similar mindset, and once he had the ball nothing but running rugby would satisfy the All Black winger. Stepping through the defensive line Jane executed a skillful offload inside back to Perenara, who in turn slickly set Brad Shields away.
Shields gained good ground before passing to the omni-present Ma’a Nonu who turned on the after burners to eat up yards in the Stormers’ half, before he too required some support.
Nonu then produced an impressive, and somewhat nonchalant flick outside back to Shields.
Aware that he didn’t have the pace to complete the move himself, Shields’ well timed offload to Barrett finished off a sublime piece of running team rugby, worthy of recognition.
Could this be the try of the season?
Barrett has since won try of the week again for an impressive individual effort which can be seen in the Shortball highlights from Round 10.
