Former Ireland U20 star Sam Prendergast is quite possibly the most exciting young talent in Irish Rugby in 2024.
Prendergast was a key member of an Irish U20 side that won last season’s U20 Six Nations Grand Slam before making it to last year’s U20 World Rugby Championship final.
Dominating at the U20 level does not always translate to the senior level, but so far, the 6’4″ flyhalf has taken like a duck to water at the URC level.
Making his debut against the Emirates Lions last season, Prendergast led a second-string Leinster side to a crucial road victory, and since then, he has gone on to impress at every opportunity.
Given the debate surrounding who should be the first choice ten at Leinster following Johnny Sexton’s retirement, it is not out of the realms of possibility that the 21-year-old could be the main operator as early as next season.
In a moment of pure magic that showcases the skill set of the player, Prendergast pulled off a truly outlandish piece of skill during Leinster’s BKT URC quarterfinal win over Ulster on the weekend.
Renowned for his chip and chase game, Prendergast not only pulled off the initial kick put but then had the skillset to kick the rebounding ball straight into the hands of his support player, Max Deegan.
This was just one moment in a highly impressive fifteen minute cameo that will no doubt have Leinster fans calling to see more of the youngster!
