Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit made headlines worldwide in February for his decision to depart professional rugby for a crack at American Football.
Joining the National Football League’s player pathway program, the 23-year-old put his head down and got to work in pursuit of his dream.
This hard work, coupled with LRZ’s undeniable athleticism, saw him catch the eye of the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs.
Joining superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, hall-of-fame-bound tight end Travis Kelce, and iconic coach Andy Reid, the former winger is in the best possible place to have a real crack at the NFL.
Citing various reasons for his departure from rugby, the main driving factor being his and his father’s love of American Football, LRZ departed rugby while keeping the door slightly ajar so that he may return.
Whilst the majority of the rugby world accepted this reason for his departure, Welsh Rugby podcast ‘Take The Three Pints Podcast’ dug deeper into the move.
What they uncovered was nothing short of jaw-dropping!
Starting off by listing where each of the Six Nations teams will be touring this summer, co-host Daniel Sims says, “Scotland has announced their summer tests. Have you heard about this?”
Responding quickly, fellow co-host Nathan Parker said, “It’s not Trinidad and Tobago, is it?” Sims responded, “Mate, it’s not far off!”
Continuing to break down where each team is heading, Sims said, “So Wales have gone to Australia, England to New Zealand, Ireland to South Africa.
“So Scotland, they’ve got Canada, USA, Chile and then Uruguay.
Interjecting, the third member of the team, Michael Fowler, said, “I have just thought of something. Is this America’s big ploy what they’re doing? Listen to this one.
“They’ve got Louis Rees-Zammit, they’ve tempted him to the NFL, they’ve given him a contract, he’ll do his residency and he’ll be able to play in a few years for America!
“No, no, no, no”, Parker responded before Fowler said, “Is there a World Cup coming to America in a few years?”
“This is what I mean; imagine that he’s like the poster boy for American Rugby. Because they’ve given him a three-contract with the practice squad, haven’t they?” Parker responded.
Adding in one final piece of hilarity to the concept, Parker said, “He’ll have a Make America Great cap on!”
