Mark Nawaqanitawase has gotten off to a flying start for his new side Sydney Roosters by scoring an impressive try on his league debut. Also helping his side with an assist and an impressive 154 running metres with ball-in-hand, it was a debut to be remembered for the former Wallaby international.
Prior to Nawaqanitawase’s appearance at the Olympics, Roosters coach Trent Robinson had given fans an idea of the new man’s plans for the year, commenting: “While Mark will be taking the final spot in our roster for 2024, our focus won’t be on rushing him into the NRL, but about fast-tracking his transition into rugby league.”
Speaking to reporters after his first appearance, Nawaqanitawase said: “The first carry was good to get out of the way, I’m just trying to find my feet and learn as much as I can.”
“There was a little bit of nerves. Always is. I knew with my first game that a lot of people would be wondering how I’m going, and myself as well.”

Well-known pundit, Phil Rothfield was full of praise for the new convert, saying on The Big Sports Breakfast radio show: “This guy is going to make it, there’s no question whatsoever,
“He was very willing but very brilliant as well. He’s got a lot of speed, a lot of skill and he’s one of those high work rate wingers who go looking for the ball.
“Will he play this year? The Roosters have said that he won’t, but I think it will depend on how he goes in NSW Cup over the next couple of weeks and I think it’ll also depend on injuries with the wingers and centres at the Roosters,” he continued.
“It’s going to be exciting. Won’t it be a great addition to the finals if the Roosters need to bring him into the side.”
