As a football mad nation every Spanish child is taught the importance of good footwork.
Unfortunately for the mayor of Madrid José Luis Martínez-Almeida, it appears he may have missed this lesson.
Spain is still very much a developing nation in rugby terms but has seen a significant uptake in the sport in particular around the Iberian Peninsula area.
Having qualified for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, it appeared as though the sport was set for another major boost. That was of course until they were stripped of their place at the tournament due to a player eligibility issue throughout the qualifying series.
Despite this setback the sport continues to grow in a very promising manner.
Yesterday the mayor was down with a significant media presence to open up the new “Las Leonas” Stadium named after the Spanish women’s team.
In a poetic manner, Mr Almeida was due to commemorate the opening ceremony by kicking the first ever kick at the new ground.
What followed was absolute hysteria as an innocent member of the media caught a flying drop kick to the face!
