Welsh rugby legend Nigel Owens was widely regarded as the game’s best referee throughout his career.
A charismatic, charming and hilarious figure in the game, Owens was respected the world over.
But at the heart of his success was his ability to connect with the players on the pitch. Clear and decisive in his decision making, Owens commanded respect from players the world over.
Refereeing over one hundred test matches, several Heineken Cups and four World Cups including the 2015 Final, Owens has seen it all.
In a throwback to show just why Owens was so respected, the below video shows him offering up his jersey as Glasgow prop Petru Du Plessis was bleeding from his head.
Nigel Owens, a top class referee and a gem of a human.
On my last ever game, I was battered and bruised, and this happened, never again has a referee offered his shirt like this! @Nigelrefowens #topman 🩸 pic.twitter.com/D7utJpMkP7
