The Queensland Reds social media team has shared the ultimate throwback ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby Pacific match against the Highlanders.
The video dates back to 2023 when Jake Upfield finished arguably one of the greatest tries in the game’s history. On an electric evening in Dunedin, during Aaron Smith’s final home match in Highlanders colours, the visiting Reds threatened to rip up the script and tear Kiwi hearts apart – all initiated by this incredible try.

Reds No. 8 Harry Wilson initially broke through the defensive line from his own 5 metre line, before throwing a brilliantly disguised dummy as he galloped towards the halfway line.
Eventually, James O’Connor would receive the ball on the wing, before former Gloucester and Bath fly-half, Freddie Burns, launched himself into the former Wallaby’s midriff – halting him on the touchline before cascading into touch himself.
Using all his ingenuity, O’Connor managed to fling the ball back into play with inches to spare for Aussie scrum-half, Tate McDermott, to continue the Reds’ attack. A couple of broken tackles and as many back-of-the-hand flicks later, the Reds were over the line.
Despite all their brilliance throughout the match, the Reds failed to hold on for victory, with Folau Fakatava touching down in the final few minutes for the home side. This year, the Reds head in as favourites as they currently sit comfortably in 3rd place in the Super Rugby Pacific table, while the Highlanders sit three places below in sixth.
