Blues number eight Hoskins Sotutu was shown a red card by referee AJ Jacobs in an embarrassing moment for the South African official when the Auckland side faced the Waratahs this past weekend.
Sotutu made a thumping hit on Karmichael Hunt, as the former Wallabies centre dipped into the tackle.
Upon seeing replays, the hit looked extremely dangerous, with force and technically high.
Mitigating circumstances, such as the fact that Hunt was slipping into it, allowed Sotutu to get the benefit of the doubt, but maybe Jacobs’ instincts took over as he then produced the wrong colour card.
“Oh, sorry,” the referee said, before pulling out his yellow card, leaving the commentators highly amused.
The sin-binning did not affect the Blues, who went on to win 32-12, as the impressive Mark Telea scored a hat-trick. If you haven’t yet seen highlights from the match, you can catch up below.
