English Rugby’s governing body the Rugby Football Union (RFU) have confirmed that they have sold the naming rights of the iconic Twickenham Stadium.
Selling the rights for an undisclosed amount to the German financial services company Allianz, the RFU will oversee the first name change for the Stadium in its 117 year history.
Taking ownership of the ground in 1907, the RFU has overseen several redevelopments of the iconic stadium with recent reports suggesting a major overhaul is incoming.
Thus, this new deal with Allianz could be a catalyst for this development work.
Returning to the sport having previously sponsored Premiership club Saracens, Allianz will now join the likes of Emirates and Etihad in having the naming rights to one of English sport’s most iconic Stadia.
A report by Sky Sports said, ‘The value of the deal was unclear, although sources said it would represent a significant boost to the governing body’s finances.’
