29-year-old rugby player, Melita Williams of North Harbour Hibiscus has sadly passed away, leaving a community of friends, family, teammates, supporters, and coaches all mourning the loss of the former player.
Taking to social media, the club posted a heartfelt message, describing a player who had a passionate love for the sport: “It is with deep sadness we acknowledge the passing of our Hibiscus teammate Melita Williams“, the club started. “Mel has been the mainstay of our forward pack over the last 3 seasons. She lifted us up when we needed it the most with her energy, determination, always showcasing her love for the game. Our Hibiscus family would like to send our heartfelt condolences to Mel’s family and the wider rugby communities she contributed to.”
Her debut for the club was against Tasman in July 2021, with her final match against Taranaki in August. She played 15 games across three Farah Palmer Cup seasons, during which she scored a try during her team’s 32-5 loss to Hawkes Bay in 2022.
“Mel’s passing leaves a void in our hearts“, echoed Eden Rugby Club, another former club of Williams’. “She was not only a talented and dedicated player but also a kind, compassionate, and inspiring individual,” the post read.
