Winning a Rugby World Cup has been a great cause for unification in the rainbow nation. In this video from Rugbypass, Springbok legend Schalk Brits talks about what the victory has meant to him as a person and to the country at large.
“It’s an unbelievable country, first of all, but we have problems. We’ve got a lot of problems. It’s actually quite a divided country… People running down the streets, irrelevant of your background, or upbringing, or the colour of your skin, we were all united. As a South African, I felt very proud.”
Like many South Africans, Brits is hoping the magic of this World Cup victory will take a lasting hold at all levels and break down every remaining layer of division. May it ever be so.
Powerful stuff, indeed.
