It was the final game of the weekend in the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, and fans were treated to a dramatic encounter at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome as Italy faced off against France. The match began with a bang, as Italy’s Tommaso Menoncello scored the opening try after just ten minutes of play, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
The game kicked off with high intensity, and in the early stages, it looked like Italy could be the team to upset the reigning champions. France’s Léo Barre thought he had put his side ahead, but his try was ruled out after a forward pass in the build-up.
This turn of events opened the door for Italy. They seized the opportunity in spectacular fashion. With a large gap in the French defence, Menoncello danced through the line, showcasing impressive footwork and vision. He dodged a couple of French tacklers before grounding the ball under the posts, leaving the defence floundering behind him. The try was a moment of individual brilliance, and Tommaso Allan made no mistake with the conversion. This gave Italy a 7-0 lead. The Stadio Olimpico erupted in celebration as Italy appeared to be in control of the game.
France score again
However, France quickly found their rhythm and demonstrated why they’re considered one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament. Just moments after Italy’s try, Les Bleus responded in devastating fashion, scoring three tries in quick succession. The French attack was as clinical as ever, cutting through Italy’s defense with precise passing and well-timed offloads. By the 30-minute mark, France had regained the lead at 21-10, leaving Italy with a mountain to climb.
Italy fight back
Despite the setback, Italy weren’t giving up. The Azzurri have always prided themselves on their resilience and this match was no different. The Italians would need to dig deep to weather the French onslaught and find a way to get back into the game.
Italy scored two more tries during the game. However, the French flare was too much for the Italians to handle and France recorded their biggest win over them. Final score: 24-73 to France.
