Rivalries in Munster club rugby are nothing new with some of the sport’s most storied clubs plying their trade in the Irish southern province.
Producing countless provincial and international players over the years, the Munster clubs are the backbone of the sport in six counties. Over the years, the very best Munster sides have consisted of players from clubs such as Cork Constitution (Peter O’Mahony, Ronan O’Gara), Young Munster (Peter Clohessy, Paul O’Connell), Garryowen (Conor Murray, Keith Wood), Shannon RFC (Jerry Flannery, Anthony Foley) to name a few.
Undoubdetly with bragging rights on the line over the years, tempers have flared and certainly this was the case in a recent clash between Cork Con and Young Munster.
Taking the win 30 – 23 in the Energia AIL, Con moved up into the top three on the table despite facing a Young Munster side packed with Munster players.
As the full time whistle blew, something sparked a major scuffle between the two sides. The ‘handbags’ boiled over to the point that players were over the edge of the sideline and fans started to get quite close to the action.
One fan then decided to do the unthinkable and threw a hot drink at one of the players. The fan in question then proceeded to deny throwing the drink despite it being caught on camera, much to the rightful anger of the player who was in the crossfire.
Adding to the fury of the players involved was the accusation which can be heard on the audio of the fan accusing the player of hitting them before they then deny throwing the drink.
For us, this is about as bad as we have seen on a rugby pitch for quite some time, and no doubt the appropriate action needs to be taken to stop future incidents from occurring.
