Last weekend South Africa captured the much coveted title of IRB Sevens World Series champions. They secured the title on the Saturday, with Fiji narrowly beating them in the final on the Sunday, as they themselves picked up the Edinburgh Sevens title.
Fiji moved into second place in the final standings, but still 30 points behind South Africa. The Boks finished the season on 132 points, ahead of Fiji on 102, England on 98, New Zealand on 88, Argentina on 68, and Kenya on 64.
South Africa picked up impressive wins on the first day at Murrayfield, easily beating France, USA, and then last seasons Series winners New Zealand.
They now hold the titles of World Champions in both 15 a side rugby and Sevens the first time the two trophies have been held simultaneously by one nation.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling for me, I can can only imagine how the players are feeling,” said coach Paul Treu.
“I don’t think the guys even realise what they’ve achieved as a team. Maybe when they’re 30 years old or sitting at home when they’re old and looking back on their careers, this is definitely going to be one of the highlights.
In the Final of the tournament, Fiji pipped South Africa in a thrilling match in which they dominated for large periods. The Boks came back well, but Fiji held on and took the title of Edinburgh Sevens winners for 2009.
