A 24-year-old South African rugby player has sadly passed away following a devastating injury during a match near Cape Town at the weekend.
While playing for Robertson Rangers against Montagu on Saturday, Ashwill Saul was removed from the pitch with a crushed chest following a freak tackle.
Such was the impact on his chest from the tackle, the 24-year-old suffered from a severely punctured lung and multiple broken ribs. Despite being rushed to hospital, he was tragically declared dead on arrival.
Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, extended his condolences to Sauls’ family, friends, and teammates, saying:
“It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of Ashwill Sauls, a dedicated and talented rugby player from the Robertson Rangers,” said Alexander.
“Ashwill’s untimely death following a fatal tackle during a friendly match against Montagu RFC has left the entire rugby community in shock and mourning.
“At just 24 years old, Ashwill had been a vital part of the Rangers for the past five years, showcasing not only his skill on the field but also his sportsmanship and passion for the game. His loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, and all who knew him,” he added.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ashwill’s family, friends, and the Robertson Rangers during this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and support to everyone affected by this tragedy. May Ashwill’s memory inspire us all to cherish every moment and play the game with the same spirit and dedication that he did. Rest in peace, Ashwill Sauls. You will be dearly missed.”
Tributes have been made to the family and friends of the deceased, Newton RFC said they are: “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Ashwill Sauls, a talented player from Robertson Rangers. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time.”
Le Chausy Building Contractors added: “Our Sincere Condolences to the Beloved family of Ashwill Sauls in there time of grieving. To the Ranger Robertson Rugby Community, the Bree langeberg Boland Rugby we feel your pain, we feel your lost.”
Noktada Construction continued: “Our support also goes out to the Roberson Rangers Rugby Club during this extremely difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.”
Jou Kant Vannie Storie concluded a beautiful line: “.. this is not goodbye, this is not the end. It’s a new beginning with you up in heaven…”
