The grassroots game is where many of our sport’s most amazing moments have come from over the years. Whether from the highest levels of school competitions or the most ‘Sunday league’ of lower-level matches, the skills on display can often even amaze the pros.
South African schoolboy rugby, in particular, has provided us with some absolute pearlers over the years – and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
In an old resurfaced clip during a match between Maritzburg 1st XV and Durban High School 1st XV, we’ve treated to some of the most electric schoolboy rugby on display. Durban High School were ruthless in their execution of their hosts during the match, but their victory wasn’t without its hiccups.
During the opening minutes of the second half, the visitors had created a wonderful breakaway opportunity, opening up the Maritzburg defence with a series of weaves and dummies, before offloading the ball with a beautifully timed ‘chicken wing’ pass to the onrushing prop forward.
The perfect try was about to become the almost-perfect try, however, as the front rower fumbled the ball over the line, leading to one of the most amazing commentary pieces of all time:
“In the name of chicken wing, it was a not necessary chicken wing, it’s a front rower – he only eats chicken wings”.

No word yet on whether the young man has recovered from the tongue lashing of the commentator, but he sure would have stayed well away from chicken wings for a while after that.
