Former United Rugby Championship winners, the DHL Stormers, are reportedly assessing replacement options for Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff.
Kitshoff’s future in rugby hangs in the balance, with a medical specialist set to determine whether the veteran Springbok prop will be able to return to the field.
Injuring his neck during a Currie Cup match against the Griquas in early September and is now set to miss the upcoming November international series.
Considering the severity of the injuries, a report in RugbyPass stated that the Cape Town-based franchise would be looking at replacement options to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
Sitting atop the Stormer’s wishlist is Hollywoodbets Sharks loosehead Ntuthuko Mchunu, who made his debut for the Springboks in 2022, earning three caps to date.
The 25-year-old former Maritzburg College student is currently behind Springbok star Ox Nche in the Sharks pecking order.
Confirming that Mchunu was a target for his team, Stormers head coach John Dobson said,
“He [Mchunu] is on our radar definitely.
“If you look at our loosehead roster, it’s Ali [Vermaak], Steve [Steven Kitshoff], Lizo Gqoboka all carrying injuries in some form and they’re senior props so a 24/25 years old Springbok like that would be a great addition to us.” He confirmed.
