Northland are through to the Mitre 10 Cup Championship final on the back of their 32-19 semifinal win over Otago. Winger Jone Macilai got things off to a brutal start by running over opposing fullback Michael Collins on his way to his team’s first try of the afternoon.
Unfortunately for Otago and Collins, Macilai was able to gain a full head of steam as the attack swung out wide. After what seemed a minor speedbump, the big winger sold a dummy, then stepped back inside and sprinted in for the score.
Speaking after the match, captain Jordan Olsen said of his team: “We showed at the start of the season that we can defend well and once we got our attack combination working, it opened the doors for us.”
In a repeat of their Ranfurly Shield challenge loss a few weeks ago, Northland will take on Hawke’s Bay in Napier once again this Friday in the Mitre 10 Cup championship final.
