Yesterday adidas unveiled the new Great Britain kit that will be used to represent Team GB’s Rugby 7s teams when the sport makes its return to the Olympics in a few months time. While rugby was last in the Olympics in 1924, there has never been a Team GB taking part in it.
In 1924 the USA won gold in rugby at the Olympics, making them the reigning champions. Their opposition at the time? France and Romania. The USA beat France 17-3 in the final.
After a lenghty absence, rugby makes a return this year, as Sevens takes center stage with the likes of Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa no doubt favourites to be at the top of the pile.
Unlike during the Sevens World Series, a combined team will represent Great Britain in Rio, and now thanks to designer Stella McCartney and adidas, we get to see what they will be wearing.
The flashy new kits, featuring home and away versions, will be worn by both the men’s and women’s teams, as can be seen here with Tom Mitchell and Emily Scarratt.
The Women’s team will be in with a good chance of pushing for Gold as the England 7s team are currently in third position on the Women’s Sevens Series standings.
In the Men’s competition though, Team GB are not in a great position going into the event.
England are currently in 8th place on the overall series standings, with Scotland and Wales in 11th and 12th respectively. They will look very sharp though and as we’ve seen with Sevens often, anything can happen on the day.
Do you like the kit, and who would you pick in your Team GB side?
