The Gallagher Premiership finally returned this weekend after a lengthy lay-off due to the men’s Guinness Six Nations tournament being on throughout February and March.
It was a derby weekend for all ten of the Premiership clubs involved that began with a victory for Leicester Tigers over Northampton Saints on Friday night (33-0).
On Saturday afternoon, the second Premiership game took place. The Showdown was back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for its fifth edition. Saracens locked horns with Harlequins in the ultimate London rugby rivalry. The event attracted thousands of fans, bringing together two of the most successful and competitive teams in English rugby.
Saracens led at half-time 12-0 through tries from Theo McFarland and Tobias Elliott respectively. It was injury replacement, Alex Goode, who pulled out a magical pass to set Fergus Burke and Tobias Elliott away for the second try on the stroke of half-time allowing Saracens to extend their lead even further. The contribution of Goode and delayed pass to Burke created a two on one, before he offloaded to Tobias Elliott who dotted down in the corner. The crowd erupted with joy.
It took Harlequins nearly 60 minutes before they scored their first try through Ben Waghorn – taking the score to 12-7 to the home side. With twenty minutes to go, could Saracens hold out or would Harlequins snatch a victory?
Two back to back penalties from Harlequins put them in front for the first time in the game with nine minutes left to go. Saracens’ discipline got the better of them, however, and Harlequins came away victorious 23-12 after a couple of penalties and a try on eighty minutes – Harlequins first away win against Saracens since 2012 – a thriller of a match!
