The Scarlets upset London Irish at home

London Irish admitted they blew it after they narrowly lost 27-25 to the Scarlets in another thrilling Heineken Cup game at the Madjeski Stadium on the weekend.

A late penalty from Stephen Jones was the difference between the two sides after scrumhalf Peter Richards had been penalised for playing the ball in an offside position.

“We made too many errors and Stephen made us pay,” said Exiles skipper Bob Casey.

Jones ended up with 17 points, while Dan Evans and Mark Jones both scored quality tries. For Irish, it was Declan Danaher and Elvis SevealiI who scored.

The last gasp victory sees them retain top spot in Pool Six, a position which few had predicted, which proved to be extra motivation for Scarlets head coach Nigel Davies.

“The fact we’ve been written off has been a motivating factor for us. When I’ve looked at some of the programs and what’s been written in the media I’ve seen that we’ve barely been mentioned.”

He added: “I’ve used that quite a bit as motivation. We have quality with some youngsters who put their hands up.

“The fact the game wasn’t on TV was disappointing as well because it was second to none as a spectacle.”

“We were superb against a quality team. We kept going despite the interception try and that’s what you need to do against big teams.

“It’s a massive win for us but it’s still a tough pool. We have two massive games against Leinster so there’s a long way to go.

“But we’re in a strong position and we’ll go into those fixtures high in confidence,” he concluded.

Take note of Daniel Evans classy individual try. Hes one to watch out for the future.
