2022 Top 14 champions Montpellier are aggressively pursuing top international talent as they aim to rebuild ahead of next season.
Earlier reports suggest Montpellier are pursuing All Black scrum-half Finlay Christie and Ireland fly-half Ross Byrne. In addition to the halfback pairing, the French club have been linked to a handful of other talented players.
Montpellier are currently in 12th position, just a season removed from surviving relegation. They are looking to revamp their squad to get back to relevance next season.
Heading into this season, Bernard Laporte’s squad added former England number eight Billy Vunipola, former Scottish captain Stuart Hogg, and Madosh Tambwe to push towards being more competitive.
Now seven rounds in and with just two wins, Montpellier’s struggles have continued on and off the field, with former England backrow Sam Simmonds confirmed to be departing for Lyon at the end of the season.
In the latest rounds of transfer rumours, it is being reported that Montpellier have sent an off to Scottish international centre Sione Tuipulotu, who had also been linked to Premiership club Harlequins. Disputing this move, reports in the British have stated that the 27-year-old will be remaining with the reigning URC champions.
Montpellier is also showing strong interest in promising English centre Lennox Anyanwu, who is a rising star at Harlequins. The 23-year-old Anyanwu, who started four times early in the season, has gained attention for his powerful play and potential. The French club are said to be facing stiff competition from Premiership side Saracens for Anyanwu’s signature.
