Toulouse completed a remarkable season double as they defended their Top 14 title to go with their Investec Champions Cup victory as they defeated Bordeaux 59 – 3.
The result is a record for a Top 14 final as the Antoine Dupont-inspired men in black scored nine tries in the most comprehensive of beatdowns seen on any rugby pitch this season.
Kicking off the scoring in the sixth minute, Dupont burrowed his way under several Bordeaux defenders in a try that highlighted his superhuman power.
Seven minutes later, Thomas Ramos added a penalty to the scoreboard to make Toulouse ten points clear.
Now firmly in control, Toulouse would kick into overdrive as they scored two tries in the space of three minutes, with Dupont being central to both. Keeping the tempo up, the Toulouse pack carried over the gainline a handful of times before Dupont flung the ball out wide to hooker Peato Mauvaka who dove over Ben Tameifuna to score in the right-hand corner.
Whilst the opening two tries were both superb, Toulouse’s third try, courtesy of Dupont, is a contender for try of the year. Winning a line-out just inside their half, Toulouse ran an intricate set play with Mauvaka charging on an angle at the Bordeaux defenders. From here, he would pass back inside to Dupont, who seared through the Bordeaux defence before pulling off an audacious chip over the head of his opposite number, Maxime Lucu, before leaping over the line for the try.
Now trailing 22 – 3, there was no coming back for Bordeaux who would simply capitulate under the pressure being applied by their rivals.
As the Bordeaux defence became passive, the Toulouse carriers romped over the gainline like a finely tuned stallion at the grand national.
Tries to Thomas Ramos (2), Julian Marchand, Blair Kinghorn, David Ainuu and Ange Capuozzo who follow as Toulouse sealed their finest victory and relegated Bordeaux to a most brutal of losses.
