Saracens and England rugby star Billy Vunipola was in the news yesterday for an incident that occurred whilst he was on holiday in Palma de Mallorca.
Reported to have got into altercations with bar staff and fellow bargoers at a venue called ‘Epic’, police were called to remove the hulking number 8 from the premises.
Escalating to a point where Vunipola was tasered twice by Spanish police, the incident immediately circled in all corners of the news.
England star ‘tasered twice’ and arrested
According to a report in the Telegraph, “Vunipola, who weighs 20 stone, is said to have challenged officers before they managed to handcuff him. He was escorted to a nearby hospital where, according to reports, he had to be sedated and strapped to his bed. “
Responding to the incident, Vunipola released a statement of his own that read, “I can confirm I was involved in an unfortunate misunderstanding when I was leaving a club in Mallorca on Sunday, which got out of hand.
“Contrary to media reports, there was no violence, no fight and I did not threaten anybody at any stage, with bottles or chairs or anything else.
“I was charged with resisting the law and, following an ‘express trial’, I have paid a fine of 240 euros.
“The Spanish police investigation is now closed, and I am flying back to the UK today.
“I will obviously cooperate with the Saracens internal process and unreservedly apologise for any inconvenience to all involved.”
Since then, video footage of the incident has emerged of the police attempting to take Vunipola into custody.
