Newcastle Falcons winger Mateo Carreras has been called out by BT Sport pundit Austin Healey for a potential eye-gouge during Friday night’s Premiership clash against Wasps.
The 21-year-old Argentine appeared to put his hand on the face of Wasps winger Josh Bassett in the first half at Kingston Park but the incident wasn’t picked up by the officials.
During the half time break Healey said: “That is naughty, that is cheeky. That’s contact with the eye and some would call it gouging. Fair play to Bassett for not reacting, but you’re (Carreras) going to get a long ban for that.”
Carreras was not penalised for the incident and played the full game, but in the end it was Wasps who came away with an 18-20 win.
REACTION:
Looked like a nasty eye gouge by Carreras on Bassett. The TMO can’t come in for foul play after the game has restarted so the fact that Wasps kicked a penalty quickly after the incident means it’ll just be a sighting. That law needs changing for foul play to allow TMO time

TMO ignoring a blatant eye gouge from the Newcastle winger. As clear a red card as you will see. Appalling from Graham Hughes. #NEWvWAS

Seeing that eye gouge replay made me feel a bit sick 🤢🤢 #GallagherPrem #NEWvWAS #WaspsRugby

There is no mitigation for seeking out an opposing players eyes. A likely mid-range entry point at 18 weeks, any prior good record could reduce it by the 50%, but there is no mitigation there, at all #NEWvWAS

Sorry … but the @premrugby officials have been completely shocking tonight #newvwas

Before this game, I wanted @FalconsRugby to win. But due to the constant whining at the officials and that disgusting gouge by Carreras, I’m thrilled @WaspsRugby took the points. #NEWvWAS

Potential citing, well yes, but something more should have been done on the pitch #NEWvWAS

You are an absolute joke @premrugby if you think the TMO and ref call on that gouging is acceptable…. he MUST look at it …. #newvwas

For once I agree with Healey. Why was the eye gouging not investigated further by the TMO? Was pretty obvious #NEWvWAS

Wow. The game continues to amaze me. An eye gauge. Clear. Poor from the officials #NEWvWAS

Glad to see Wasps come away with the win tonight. A nasty incident that needs to be reviewed now and dealt with appropriately #NEWvWAS

Its his action of moving his hand in after everyone had stopped….looked totally pre-meditated from that angle at the back of the in goal area #NEWvWAS

Why is the TMO not looking at that gouge? #newvwas

Shocking officiating tonight @premrugby – totally get not spotting a ‘mishap’ immediately, but clear as day in replays and from Bassett’s reaction. TMO should have “check, checked” and reviewed the incident there and then, not leave it to a citing officer at a later date #NEWvWAS
