Georgian Rugby took another major step forward in the court of rugby public opinion as they went toe-to-toe with Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies in Sydney.
Eventually succumbing to a 40 – 29 loss, Richard Cockerill’s side showed their full array of skills a week on from defeating Eddie Jones’s Japan on the road.
Scoring their first try through one of the hallmarks of the Georgian game, the visitors showed off their power in the forwards.
In stark contrast to their opener, Georgia would score two exceptional attacking tries with the second one (third of the day) being a real contender for try of the year as they went 110 meters to touch down.
Starting the move deep in their in-goal area, the Lelos showed incredible bravery and skill.
Putting the ball through the hands quickly before winger Akaki Tabutsadze kicked long into acres of open space, the Georgian attack chased hard.
Chasing hard Tabutsadze would outpace the Wallabies defence which were down a man following Filipo Daugunu’s red card, the scrum cap wearing winger dove over the line and went straight into the arms of his substitute teammates who were warming up in the in-goal area.
For the Wallabies whilst it was a scrappy affair they were facing game opposition in the Georgian’s who are currently ranked twelfth in the world and are pressing hard for more inclusion at the top table of the game.
Still undefeated under new head coach Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies will now prepare for the upcoming Rugby Championship whilst Georgia’s next test match will be against Italy in November.
