In every sport there are certain constants that remain true throughout history. One such fact is that South African schoolboy rugby is at a level that would rival any other sport for quality, intensity and passion.
In one of this season’s most highly anticipated match ups, powerhouses Bishops Diocesan College and Paul Roos Gymnasium went toe-to-toe in a highly entertaining clash.
Bishops have been on a tear so far this season winning all seven of their previous fixtures. They once again looked to be on for another major scalp as they raced into a 31 – 7 lead.
For Paul Roos the situation appeared rather dire as they struggled to make inroads into the Bishops defence.
That was of course until number 22 Jurenzo Julius entered the fray. The big physical back made his presence felt immediately as he burst through multiple tackles in a play that started inside the Paul Roos half.
As Julius rushed down the left wing, he got the offload away to winger Christian Brandt who went over in the corner. This score was just what the home side needed as they finally got a foothold in the contest.

This score was quickly followed by another try in the left corner, this time it was Brandt who set up the score for fellow wing Luke Graham.
With the scores now reading 31 – 17, all of the momentum was with Paul Roos. That was of course until Bishops scored a beautifully taken try off the back of a strong scrum. With front foot ball, the Bishops backs torched Paul Roos to reassert their dominance and move into a 38 – 17 lead.
Unfortunately for the visitors that would be their final score for the day as the home side led by Julius completed a remarkable comeback ending with a final score of 38 – 38.
This fixture once again highlighted just why South African rugby is in such a healthy position and will remain so for years to come.
