England prop Joe Marler has gone viral on the video app TikTok, following England’s 20-17 loss to Scotland.
Scotland retained the Calcutta Cup for the second year in a row with their 20-17 defeat of England in a titanic battle in the opening round of the 2022 Six Nations at Murrayfield. The turning point in the game came late on in the second half, when substitute Luke Cowan-Dickie, deliberately slapped a Finn Russell cross kick into touch. Referee Ben O’Keefe, opted to send Cowan-Dickie to the sin bin and awarded a penalty try to Scotland to tie the game at 17 a piece. In the following 5 minutes, Finn Russell added a penalty for Scotland to put them in the lead and the win at 20-17.
It was during the 10 minute sin bin awarded to substitute hooker, Luke Cowan Dickie, that prop Joe Marler, was tasked with throwing the ball into the line-out. England were awarded a line-out just over 5 metres away from their own try-line when Marler opted to put the ball in. Unfortunately for Marler and England, Marler’s throw did not travel the required 5 minute distance and Scotland were awarded the option of a scrum or line-out.

In the days following the game, Marler posted a hilarious video to TikTok, reacting to his own mistake. Marler did his own commentary on his lineout throw-in, on the platform. Marler even says in the video “I don’t know how to throw the ball in!”. Having not had hours of practice that hookers normally have, the odds were most definitely stacked against Marler having a successful throw.
The video, at the time of writing, sits at over 565,000 views and 90,000 likes. In a deal announced in the weeks leading up to the 2022 edition of the tournament, TikTok and the Six Nations have agreed a 4 year partnership. TikTok is now the ‘official fans of Six Nations Rugby’ and are the first ever title sponsor of the Women’s Six Nations.
