Joe Marler is undoubtedly one of rugby’s biggest characters and he proved it yet again during this weekend’s game between Leicester Tigers and Harlequins.
The game always had the potential to throw up and joke or two with a handful of players facing up against previous teammates, such as Mike Brown and Chris Ashton.
On the subject of the latter, Ashton ended his career in the most Chris Ashton way possible after being shown a red card for a high shot on Caden Murley meaning that he will miss Tiger’s remaining playoff games.
Since he his retiring at the end of the season, his red card likely means that his last act in professional rugby was being given his marching orders – a somewhat poetic end.
From one pantomime villain to another, Joe Marler was shown a yellow card in the dying embers of the game. Rather than protesting the card, Marler took it well, grinning to the referee and crowd before leaning up on the advertising boardings and having a joke with Leicester supporters.

Despite having a laugh with the opposition fans, Joe would’ve been happy with how his side finished the season, with a 20-17 win at Welford Road.
Next for the Tigers is an away semi-final against Sale Sharks.
